IRS Tax Audit

The Internal Revenue Service performs more than ten thousand audits annually. Audits entail examining individual and/or business tax returns along with accompanying documents to verify the accuracy of reported information and ensure correct tax payment. Audits come in various forms, including in-person (office and field audits) and through mail (correspondence audits). In the case of a correspondence audit, the taxpayer will be notified via mail to provide additional details regarding specific items on the tax return like income, expenses, and itemized deductions.

The most common issues that the IRS investigates include business expenses claimed on schedule C, itemized deductions on schedule A, and underreported income. Typically, the IRS has a three-year window from the date of filing to assess additional taxes through an examination.

Tax Audit Representation Process

The audit process commences with the IRS issuing a notice requesting the submission of documentation to support the income, adjustments, deductions, or credits claimed on the return, either through correspondence or in-person. Following the review of the submitted documentation, an examination report is sent to the taxpayer detailing any proposed changes to the tax by the examiner. The taxpayer has the option to provide further documentation to support their position or to appeal the examination report. If additional documents are submitted, the auditor will review them and, if necessary, issue a revised examination report. Following this, a final examination report will be issued. Upon receiving the final examination report, the taxpayer can choose to agree to the proposed additional assessment, appeal the assessment, or leave the examination unresolved.
